My RantingsHere's a collection of rantings that have been in my newsletter, the Butler Banter, starting in order.Completely Unedited Caffeine Driven Midnight Ranting
Tick… Tock… Tick… Tock… Do you hear it? Tick… Tock… We’re now in a strange time period, the time between Valentines day and the Freshmen Formal. Less then two weeks left now… Who’s idea was it to place what was supposed to be a winter formal all the way out at March?!? So we are stuck at an awkward moment where we have to decide whether to find a date, go single, or not go at all. From what I’ve observed, many girls are just going as groups, leaving vast herds of us males dateless! Oh what are we supposed to do? It’s not normal for guys to clump together to go to dances, I mean who wants to just pay $50 for a tux and not be guaranteed at least someone to dance with? So what it comes down to is either find a date, or don’t go… Tick…. Tock… Tick… Tock… Next item on my mind, what exactly are the reference names for students in the other residential colleges? I’ve never been clear on this issue. Well I know that we’re all Butlerites. So would that make our neighbors Wilsonites? So what about those in the other colleges? Are the ones from Mathey called Matties or Mattites or Mattieites? Rockies or Rockettes? I’m pretty sure the Forbes people are called Forbesbians. By the way, could someone tell me why there are two golden lions outside of Wilcox? Ok, now for a recap of the basketball games. We had a pretty good attendance at the Upenn game but there was no spirit! What’s wrong?!? Last year we were getting technicals called on the audience because people were jumping up and down in the stands, causing the baskets to actually sway during foul shots! What happened this time? There was no cheer! The Penn fans cheered louder then the Princeton fans! Fans! There’s the main point, people were just there to watch, they were not there to cheer, well for the next game I want to hear you all CHEERING! Then again it could’ve been those dreadful bandannas that were given out, fairly distasteful in design, maybe they were cursed or something… Anyway, we lost the Penn home game…. But we did win the Dartmouth and Hahvahd games! That was a nice morale booster. People were actually cheering this time! The halftime shows were pretty with Expressions and Princeton Karate. I still believe it had to do with the lack of those dreadful bandannas. Every time the student souvenir organization has given out souvenirs at this year’s games, we’ve lost! Could there be a connection? Hmm… This weekend’s game is going to be against

For those of you who missed it, which would be only a few of you, SportsNight was great! Lots of games, prizes, etc. I started off with the videogame tournament, which I lost. Then the airhockey tournament, which I lost. Then I joined the blind volleyball tournament with the Butler team and we won our first match. Then I had to leave for Broomball but the volleyball team did great without me and won the tournament, that’s a shoutout to ya’ll team! Now at the broomball tournament, I was the only Butlerite there! Why I was the only one there, I don’t know but the Woody Wu Grad team needed a fifth player so I joined with them. So there we were, a rag tag coalition consisting of a frosh Butlerite who never played Broomball before and four Grad students. Since I was an amateur, the grad guys decided to make me goalie. So there I am in my deep blue Butler Sweatshirt with khakis and my glove of Freedom facing off against Cloister first. In the first match, we defeated them 3-0! An unbelievable victory, who’d ever believe our team could win anything? Then we faced off against the Rockettes and we beat them 3-1. Then for the final round we fought against Colonial to whom we lost because of technicalities. But hey we did get second place and secured the second place points for Butler. To my grad buddies, thanks guys, wherever you are. Butler took 3rd place with 480 IM points for the night. By the way, dodge ball was great though I sucked at it for the first two rounds. During the third round I finally activated my Matrix moves and made some progress. Overall it was fun. For those of you who missed it, the basketball
game against Other then that, the Freshmen formal is coming up in 4 days!!! And my insiders tell me that it’s going to be great, it better be considering how much was spent on it. Insider reports claimed it cost $ XXXXX. Half of the cost is from the Trustee’s Alcohol Initiative. They’re expecting attendance of around 600 people. So for those of you who are still indecisive, just go! But if you don’t go, I’m sure there’s gonna be a large section of rant about it in the next Banter. Oh ya, another piece of insider info is that the sweatshirts are in. I was right in my belief that they had underestimated class attendance; they only had shirts for 40% of the class when 80% showed up! The sweatshirts are currently sitting while they plan distribution, and winter is almost over too! Grrr! Guess we won’t use them till next year.

Ah, back from spring break! And already the work is starting to pile up! Darn writing seminars! Since “HAY FEVER!” is coming up in a few weeks, we need more ‘volunteers’ for the dunk tank! I believe many of you agree that the person we want to dunk most is Kerry, the creator of writing seminars! I’ll see what I can do! Ok, I’ll stop using exclamations now. The freshmen formal, which seems so long ago, was very good indeed. The money seems to have been well spent! Also, our 05 sweatshirts have finally arrived. Now that I’ve got my 05 sweatshirts, everything seems well, Beau seems to have caught up with things and is doing a good job. But I would still like to see Beau as a dunk tank candidate, just for fun. Now if anyone can convince Nina (and I’ve tried) to do the dunk tank I would be very impressed! Also, other news say that the USG had tried to plan a big event, involving showing a certain movie out on Cannon Green and inviting a certain Nobel prize winning professor to talk… but it seems that the event may be bumped to next year. I apologize for the lack of a Banter two weeks ago, due to unforeseen circumstances I mysteriously ended up in Louisville, Kentucky on Tuesday… At that time I also came down with conjunctivitis and a couple of other minor illnesses but they have since been defeated. By the way, we made it onto CNN because of pink eye. Does anyone else detect a conspiracy here? Why did Princeton and Dartmouth get affected by pink eye but not the other Ivy’s in between? Could one of our arch nemesis’s (or is it nemeses?) be behind this sinister contagious annoyance? Or do we just have too many close interpersonal relationships with The Big Green? …Am I the only person who has an arch-nemesis at every Ivy League college? I’ll get to that story at another time. Also, the basketball season has ended. But there were many really good games. Now I know why no one likes UPenn, who can stand a school with a mascot like the Quaker! I mean it truly makes you want to run it over with a Mack truck to put it out of its misery. We lost the UPenn game. And then some genius decided it would be a good idea to put the Yale-Princeton game at a neutral site, how’s about at UPenn! Right, this time the Quaker fans showed up to cheer… for themselves… where else would 500 kids show up to a game to cheer for themselves even though they’re not playing? Makes you want to stab yourself with a fork. Anyway, unfortunately we lost the Yale game. But we did make the NIT. The first, and only game was against Louisville Kentucky at the famous Freedom Hall. It was a great game, we lost by 1 point! Pretty good for facing a team that beat Cincinnati. The southern hospitality was pretty nice as well. Thank you team for a fine season and farewell seniors.

Oh where shall I begin this week’s rant? How’s about an incident I recently got wind of that occurred on the night of the freshmen formal; it seems a bunch of frat boys from Upenn were up to no good in doing some initiation stunts that night. One of their missions was to record the Princeton Freshmen Formal on video to prove that they were there. And somehow they got in! They recorded the entire thing on video, caused some trouble and then went on to do some other things that are actually illegal. So now they’re in trouble with the national chapter and the video is in the evidence room somewhere. Anyhow, that’s another reason we don’t like Upenn. How the heck did they get into the dance anyway? I inquired and found that security was fairly tight, oh well. Speaking of other schools, I think it’s time to clear up some rivalries. The actual classic Ivy league rivalry is between Princeton, Yalesucks, and Hahvahd although Hahvahd and Yalesucks tend to dislike each other more but also dislike us. Dartmouth and Brown tend to be rivals generally although they’ll take free shots at Hahvand and Yalesucks when given the chance. They tend to like us. Cornell and Columbia are generally rivals; they don’t deal with us much. Upenn considers us to be their rivals of course and they hate us with a vengeance. Haven’t you ever heard of the “Tiger Bashing Day” that they have each year? But keep in mind that NO ONE likes Upenn. Also there are many non-Ivy’s that consider us to be rivals, like, John Hopkins has made claims that we’re their rival before. Someone remind me where that place is… So this should clear things up a bit… I think… nevermind. Now, about the Hoedown. The Hoedown is officially entitled HAYFEVER, and this will be a great event! This event has been in design for months, and every member of the council has had a hand in it’s creation. There will be several forms of entertainment; A DJ for the hot mixes that you usually craze! A caller for country line dancing and they’ll teach you line dancing! A Pig! Several games from 3-legged race to hay barrel tossing and the PIE EATING CONTEST! Of course there will be food, a lot of food, a lot of really good food, that’s about all the details for food. There will be a lot of prizes, like gift certificates, free tshirts, and one big prize that you get to pick (rumors range from x-box to digital camera to TV, etc)…. Hold on, as I’m typing this I just found out that the event might be moved a day or two, I’ll get back to you all about this in the next banter… Also I’m still dealing with the state on water issues since they won’t let us have a dunk tank because of the drought, so we might have a bungee bull there instead! Oh well, dunk your RA in the dunk tank or toss your RA off a bull, it’s about the same.
Till next week, Yinan ’05 Banter Editor, yinanw@.
PS: In the future, if anyone plans a rally, be sure you have good propaganda! I hire out as a spin-doctor for a modest fee. PPS: Has anyone here seen red squirrels? So far I’ve only seen them twice. PPPS: We need more submissions to the banter, anything you really want to say, just

So have you looked on the propaganda page yet? Those are some selections from stunts for the Screw Your Roommate Dance (which was fun if you had a date) which were quite clever. Remember, if you really want to screw your roommate then let them perform their stunt before their date has arrived. And if you really want to get me back for placing your picture on the back, you can dunk me at Hay Fever. Yes, the Hoedown, or Hay Fever, is going to be on April 27th from 10pm to 2am. There’s a lot of prefrosh stuff that weekend and so the street will be closed that night, so where else are you going to go? Anyway, after battling several weeks the NJDEP finally gave us the clearance to use water in our dunk tank. What else were we supposed to fill it with? Jello? Whip Cream? Ice Cream? I’m getting off track here, anyway, the hoedown should be a great time. Besides, how often do you get to dunk your RA’s? Now it’s time for a short political analysis of current situations. First of all, I think the system of running for class officers really suck. Personally I don’t like the system because it doesn’t let you know early on who’s running and campaigning is for less then a week. I didn’t even know that they were this week until Beau called me up last night to chat about politics. The main candidates right now seem to be Beau, who’s up for reelection, and Kyle Detwiler, who’s one of our senators. Beau lagged a bit earlier this year and has been playing catch-up ever since but otherwise he’s alright, he has plans for one last class event soon. Kyle keeps all USG issues cloaked in secrecy but promises a lot of stuff for next year including a Six Flags Trip for our class. I assume that our Butler candidate Fed is still going for Vice Presidency or at least some position, Fed, you’re doing a good job. Other then that there does not seem to be much going on. Personally I’m going to stay away from politics till later on (Vote for me for USG president in late 2003!) but for now all I can say is that, whoever wins this election, will be pulled in to be dunked!
Until Next Week, Yinan Wang ’05 Banter Editor, yinanw@
The Butler Ranter!: Submit rants to yinanw@.
I’ll start off this week’s rant with some intramural news. As you can see from the standings, our lead is evaporating fast. We need for participation to defend our IM title! For example, why was I the only Butlerite at the IM badminton tournament? It was doubles badminton but it was more like double vs. me. Of course I lost playing solo but at least I got 9 points. Now at IM bowling there was a slightly better turnout; 4 total including me. But Forbes had a caravan of more then a dozen bowlers, grrr… We need to step up the competition! Give them some heat! Go to the fun run this Friday! I’ll be there! The upcoming tournaments are tennis and golf and since I have no experience in those games I’m expecting some other Butlerites to defend. So who went to Thursday Night Live? Was it a waste of time and money? I’ve heard plenty of complaints in the past week about how bad Tracy Morgan was. Oh well, if it wasn’t for a scheduling mistake by the USG maybe we could’ve had a world-class band instead! What am I talking about you ask? Well apparently the USG (not the whole USG, just some individuals) had scheduled a band and then made some mistakes with scheduling and had to cancel the band and get Thur Night Live. What was the band you ask? Here’s a hint: the name of the band is composed of a letter and a number. So much for the USG’s privacy contract…(If a member of the USG would like to clear this up, feel free to write to me) Now its time for some political stuff, I’m going to stay neutral for this; there are two candidates for the 05’ class president run offs; Kyle and Beau. Ouch, can’t you just feel the angst when they’re in a room together? They should cool down, say, with a good dunking in the dunk tank. Anyway, both of them have been pulling every trick they’ve got left and its getting me PO’d. I’m tired of political fliers! I want to see some nice Big Brother style posters go up! I want to see some good old propaganda! And maybe a nice mudslinging debate just like the old days! Actually, I want to hear both of them make attempts at singing Old Nass (My idea!)! Remember to vote Yinan for USG Pres in late 2003! (www.yinanforpromking.com is still online! I’ll get to that story at another time…)

PS: The hoedown is this Saturday Night! And since The Street is closed, where else are you going to go? Come and dunk me!
Well the hoedown went down pretty well, even if it did rain. A lot of people voluntarily wanted to get dunked for the prized t-shirts. Yup, no longer were t-shirts first come first serve, this time you had to work for them! The pig ran around campus earlier and was hanging around the hoedown. Apparently Mr.Pig went on that thing with Dr.Drew from Loveline and was told to “Sit your ass down!” The food was pretty good and the Caller and DJ were great. That’s the last time I drive 58 miles to find a pig. Now, while I was procrastinating, I decided to look for material about paranormal happenings at Princeton. I managed to find two things: 1) There appears to be some sort of study on telekinesis at the E-quad, 2) Murray Dodge is haunted. Apparently there has been paranormal phenomenon reported in the theater Intime. The Murray part of the building is named after Princeton grad Hamilton Murray who was lost at sea, his family donated the money for the building in 1879. Various activity include tools and sets disappearing or moving by themselves. Also the ghostly portrait is said to mysteriously light up at night. An apparition of a man in a long coat and top hat has been reported in the theater, he appears and just disappears. If anyone has a personal account of ghostly phenomenon on campus, I’d be interested in hearing about it. And now for something more cheery, hmm… actually reading period and finals are coming up so there isn’t anything really interesting happening unless you count the end of this semester in a few short weeks. Other then that, we need a few last IM points to beat Forbes, join the Tennis tournament! Oh, and yes I am working on the 6 page rant.
