The dunes of Merzouga, aka. Arrakis

For those of you who don't get the Arrakis reference, it's a reference to Dune by Frank Herbert. So after Alnif, Maia and I traveled to Erfoud and then south to Merzouga to spend a night in the sand dunes. We hired a guy for a camel tour and stayed at a common oasis. Since it was freezing cold at this point, we were the only tourists at this site, which made it nice. Oh, and for future travelers, yes, there is currently a paved road from Erfoud to Merzouga, you don't need to go offroad or go by 4x4.

Sand.

Maia. We're both bundled up against the 20 mph winds, at 0 C.

More dunes. I don't feel I really need to comment on most of the following pics, just sit back and enjoy.

There's our tent at the main site.

Note, to the east, that straight cliff sections is the Algerian border.

There's our camp.

From ground level.

Welcome to Arrakis.

That's the cat who decided to spend the night with us.

Morning at the camp.

Critter burrow.

Another wall of sand.

A piece of straw, lying on the sand, in early morning light.

Me and Maia on camels.

I'm smiling.
